Plans to hike up existing parking charges in Cheshire East and introduce fees on free car parks will cripple town centre traders and drive cars on to residential streets, councillors said.
Members of Cheshire East’s highways and transport committee were unhappy they were being asked to give feedback on budget proposals to increase charges when very little detail was given.

Parking charges look set to be reviewed across Cheshire East as the council struggles to balance its books because of soaring inflation costs.
Plans to introduce pay and display in towns such as Middlewich, Sandbach and Alsager – which currently offer free parking – were scuppered last year when the highways committee voted against the plan.

Cheshire East Council might have to scrap some of its controversial rubble charges if government plans to change rules around charging for DIY waste go ahead.
The council introduced its rubble charge – up to £3.50 for a bag – in January 2018.
Crewe and Nantwich MP Dr Kieran Mullan has hit out at the lack of progress on making car parking charges across Cheshire East fairer.
Users of car parks in Nantwich and Crewe are currently charged for car parking, and face some of the highest charges in the borough.

Plans to introduce parking charges in towns where it is currently free, have been controversially scrapped by Cheshire East Council.
If approved, charges would have been introduced in Middlewich, Alsager, Holmes Chapel, Sandbach and other towns in line with Nantwich, Crewe, and Macclesfield.

Car parking charges look set to be introduced in Middlewich, Sandbach, Alsager and other Cheshire East towns which are free at the moment.
Sunday charging is also on the cards, with Cheshire East planning to introduce a flat £1 rate for stays longer than an hour across all council-owned paying car parks in the borough on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

A 90-year-old woman has blasted Cheshire East Council proposals to charge over 85s for a lifeline care alarm service which is currently free.
Cheshire East is consulting with residents on proposals to introduce a £5 a week charge for the telecare service which, at present, is free to residents aged 85 and over if they live alone.

A bid to scrap car park charges in Cheshire East towns like Nantwich and Crewe over Christmas has been brought forward by the council’s Conservative group.
Conservative leader Cllr Janet Clowes has proposed a motion for this week’s full CEC council meeting, which has been seconded by deputy leader Cllr Stewart Gardiner.
Councillors across Crewe and Nantwich today urged residents to take part in a Cheshire East Council public consultation on plans to revamp car parking provision and parking charges.
Authority chiefs say results will influence plans on changes to parking provision and charges as well as “inform the future direction of how to improve transport, walking and cycling in our towns”.
