Cheshire East Council looks set to do a U-turn and scrap plans to fine drivers who sit in stationary vehicles with their engines running.
Just 12 months ago the highways and transport committee voted to adopt legal powers to crack down on the polluting practice.
CEC bosses say they have secured Government funding to step up its “Show the air you care” campaign.
It targets vehicle engine idling and wood burning stoves in the borough.

Cheshire East Council could soon start issuing fines to drivers who leave their engine idling as a review of the policy is taking place.
This could mean parents waiting to pick up their children outside schools in the borough who refuse to turn their engine off could face a £60 fine.

The council’s highways and transport committee narrowly voted in favour of asking for a feasibility study to be undertaken into engine idling and enforcement.

Parents collecting their children from school should switch their engines off to help improve air quality, says a Cheshire East Councillor.
Cllr Mick Warren, CEC cabinet member for communities, said “idling engines” is adding pollution and impacting on health.
