Children in Wistaston celebrated Chinese New Year with activities presented by Olwyn Payton from Nantwich Sainsbury’s.

Olwyn worked in Hong Kong for 15 years and brought her knowledge of Chinese culture to share with staff and pupils to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

The children at Wistaston Church Lane Primary learnt about the traditions and dressed up in traditional Chinese clothes.

They all received a customary ‘lai see’ packet which is a red envelope given to children in Chinese families with money in it.

Youngsters had a chocolate coin in theirs, and were also taught to welcome the New Year in Cantonese.

The school’s PTA member Sheila Leung also attended with her husband Ken, who was born in Hong Kong and who prepared Chinese food.

Olwyn said: “It was such a great success that Sheila Leung and I are already planning a much bigger event for next year.

“I think it is really important children learn about the traditions and celebrations of other cultures as well as acquiring some basic phrases in another language.

“We all had a great time and the staff and children enjoyed wearing the Chinese clothes and tasting Ken’s home cooking.”
