Rail chiefs have apologised for causing traffic chaos in and around Nantwich for most of the week.
The closure of the London Road A51 level crossing since Monday has caused long delays across the town.
Some residents complained because letters received outlining the work failed to indicate lengthy closures.
Engineers have been on site at the crossing to test out new barriers and signalling equipment. It is due to reopen again this morning (Friday, October 18)
A spokeswoman for Network Rail West and Wales said: “We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
“The level crossing at London Road has been closed until Friday 7am owing to work being carried out to test the new barrier.
“It is part of the programme to modernise the signalling equipment between Crewe and Shrewsbury.”
The closure was made worse by Cheshire East Highways resurfacing works on the A51 south of the town near Yew Tree Lane and Bridgemere.
Wellington Road in Nantwich is also due to close for two days next week (October 21) to allow work to install a pedestrian crossing next to St Anne’s Catholic Primary School.
