Former College Graphics student Meg Naylor (left) and Zoe Simpson Celebrate Uni Scholarship Award

A Nantwich student is one of two from South Cheshire College to land university scholarships.

Meg Naylor, former Malbank School pupil, has received £1,500 towards her studies at Staffordshire University.

Fellow South Cheshire College student Zoe Simpson won a similar amount, and they were two of just 50 students across the whole university to have landed the cash prize.

Meg and Zoe, who are both studying Surface Pattern Design at the Stoke-on-Trent university, were chosen based on their impressive college portfolios and grades.

Both completed their South Cheshire College Level 3 Graphic Design programme in June 2015.

Zoe achieved two Distinction star grades and a Distinction and Meg gained two Distinctions and a Merit grade.

The scholarships have been handed out to first year students who can use them to pay for food and groceries on campus and art materials, printing costs, books and trips.

Zoe, 20, and Meg, 18, were both stunned when they found out they had won the prizes which are sponsored by betting giant bet365.

Meg, of Nantwich, said: “I have lots of good memories of South Cheshire College and the course was great and was the stepping stone to what we are both studying now at university.

“I’ll always be grateful to Mike and the tutors here for what they did for me. Being awarded this scholarship is fantastic.”

Zoe, of Kidsgrove, added: “We feel really pleased that two of us from the same South Cheshire College course have won this award because only 50 were handed out across the entire university.”

Mike Smith, lecturer in Graphic Design at South Cheshire College, said: “Zoe and Meg were excellent students who both had a real passion for Graphic Design.

“It’s wonderful they have received these scholarships which are a big boost for them in their first year of study at university. We wish them well for the future.”

  1. No wonder this country doesnt manufacture or export anything anymore when hardly anyone studies real subjects

    • Real subjects? Think about this who designs the clothes you wear to the car you drive to the packaging on food and drink you consume every single day of your life? Who designed the device or computer you read this article and wrote that foment with? . . . University design graduates create the world you live in, if you are so small minded as to think it is not a “real subject” then you are wrong, the creative industry is the most competitive and involves a lot of hard work, long hours, technical skill, creativity and knowledge. The reason this country hardly exports or manufactures anything any more is because any talented designers these days are taken on abroad where pay is better. I think you will find that designers that have come from courses like these students have would have also been design students who studied a very “real” subject at some point in their life. Both these girls should be incredibly proud of them selves.

    • Hi Andrew, just thought I would let you know that Design contributes £71.7 billion to the UK’s economy. You say it’s not a real subject but everything you see in this world is designed. From the TV you watch to the car you drive. You can not denie that design isn’t a real industry.
