Hundreds of people gathered in Nantwich town centre today to remember loved ones at a moving Tree of Light ceremony.
It has become a popular and loved event in the town, organised by Nantwich Town Council, giving families and friends a chance to remember the loss of loved ones in the run up to Christmas.
The tree was lit up shortly after 5.30pm today (Sunday November 2nd) outside St Mary’s Church.
This year it was dedicated to young motorcyclist Joshua Stockton, who died on a road accident on Crewe Road in Wistaston in September.
Rev Mark Hart opened the ceremony which was followed by a short speech dedicating the tree by Mayor of Nantwich, Cllr Mary Slinn.
There was a moving rendition of Amazing Grace by the church choir, with many onlookers joining in the song.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Kim Jamson then read a poem “How Grateful I Would Be to Have Just One More Day” by Kathy J Parenteau.
The choir then performed “Let Us Light a Candle” by Richard Shephard as the lights were switched on.#
Rev Mark Hart said: “It’s a great privilege to host the Tree of Light ceremony and our thanks to Nantwich Town Council for making it possible.
“We remember our loved ones and the tree will hold their memory from now to beyond Christmas.”
Mayor Cllr Slinn added: “Every year the tree becomes a symbol of love and our memories.

“Each light that shines represents someone precious, someone we miss, and someone we continue to hold close in our hearts.
“It’s a moment to pause, to reflect and to remember again. This year our tree is dedicated to Josh Stockton, a young man who’s life was tragically cut short in an accident.
“Josh was full of life, kind, caring and deeply loved by all who knew him. His passing has touched the hearts of many in our community.
“And we hold his family and friends in our thoughts this evening.”
The Tree contains hundreds of lit baubles which residents have paid a £5 donation for so they can cherish and remember their named lost loved ones.

Those who have previously purchased a bauble were also able to return it to be re-hung for a donation of £3.
In addition, names will also be listed on Nantwich Town Council webpage of remembrance.
The full cost of the tree has been covered by the town council and all donations will be divided between the Mayor’s charities and St Mary’s Church.
