A kind-hearted South Cheshire College student has raised over £700 for charity after taking part in a one-off boxing match.

Father-of-two Phil Jones stepped into the ring for the charity stunt at Gregory’s nightclub in Nantwich.

The 32-year-old, who plays American football for Crewe Railroaders, had never tried boxing but underwent an intensive fitness programme for the showdown, losing two stone in weight.

Phil was roared on by friends and family to raise cash for Sands – the stillborn and neonatal death charity.

Sands provides local support through the Cheshire East and North Staffordshire branches.

The money will help to support people affected by the death of a baby, to improve the quality of care and services provided to bereaved parents and their families and promote and fund future research.

Funkin Fitness organised the White Collar Boxing Event, which featured up to 15 fights. Phil’s bout was three two-minute rounds.

He said: “American Football is my sport and I’ve never been in a boxing ring before. I got completely annihilated in the fight but it was all for a very worthy cause.

“This gave me the chance to train and prepare for something completely different and I definitely want to do more fundraising events for Sands.”

Phil was presented with a certificate for his generous donation at South Cheshire College by Sands fundraiser Gary Davies.

Gary said: “We are very grateful for Phil’s wonderful donation. I was there to support Phil on the night and he put in an absolutely fantastic effort. The money will be very useful in supporting Sands throughout the local area.”

Sands Cheshire East group are staging a fun day on Sunday July 15, 1pm-6pm, to raise more funds. Activities will include 5-a-side football, face painting, bouncy castle, tombola, licensed bar and barbecue plus more.
