Birmingham to Crewe leg of HS2 delayed by further two years

Ministers have agreed to delay the second of HS2 between Crewe and Birmingham amid soaring costs for the controversial high speed railway.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said they will now prioritise the opening section, which means the completion and opening of Phase 2a to Crewe could be delayed by up to two years.

HS2 Ltd has today announced the formal start of construction on the project which will eventually connect South Cheshire to London in under an hour.

It follows the announcement in April when Department for Transport gave approval for HS2 Ltd to issue Notice to Proceed to the four Main Works Civils Contractors working on the project.

Cheshire East Council is set to play a key role in making decisions on HS2’s construction and design.

The council agreed on Thursday (July 18) to become a ‘qualifying authority’ for Phase 2a – the route between Crewe and Birmingham – in parts of the high-speed rail route that sit in the borough.

Cheshire East Council chiefs could be forced to review their local plan if MPs give the green light for HS2 to hit Cheshire.

The authority adopted its local plan strategy for up to 2030 last July – three years after it was told to go back to the drawing board after submitting its first draft to the planning inspectorate.
