Hundreds of people flocked to Willaston Primary Academy for the 47th annual Willaston World Worm Charming Championships.
The quirky event, which has become one of Cheshire’s most unusual traditions, has been hosted in the village since 1980.

The annual Willaston World Worm Charming Championships will take place on Saturday June 22 at Willaston Primary Academy.
The World Worm Charming Championships began in 1980, and competitors have 30 minutes to charm and collect as many worms as possible from their 3×3 metre plot.
A Nantwich school has back-tracked on plans to relocate its waste compound to its boundary edge after complaints from neighbours.
Residents in Willaston say they were not consulted about the plan and complained to Cheshire East Council when they realised what was happening at Willaston Primary Academy.

Organisers of the World Worm Charming Championships in Willaston have called off this year’s event due to “uncertainty around coronavirus restrictions”.
The annual event held at Willaston Primary School attracts international attention, but will not take place this year.
Willaston Primary School has sent two year groups home after one of its pupils tested positive for Covid-19.
It’s believed years 3 and 4 have been sent home and those pupils will have to self isolate for two weeks, to return on October 14.
Worm charmers from around the globe will descend on Willaston Primary Academy near Nantwich later this month for the annual World Worm Charming Championships.
The quirky competition is known around the world and hundreds are expected to compete for the Best Worm Charmer trophy.
Willaston Primary is to stage a ‘firework extravaganza’ on Friday October 28.
The event will feature fairground rides as well as hot and cold refreshments, including hot dogs and burgers.
