Doug Butterill and Highfields School youngsters in hedgehogs scheme

Youngsters in Nantwich are teaming up to help save the town’s declining hedgehog population.

Pupils at Highfields Community Primary School are doing their bit to help out their spiky friends.

And with the help of local resident and Nantwich in Bloom stalwart Doug Butterill, some year 4 children are creating new areas for hedgehogs to flourish.

They have placed a hedgehog house, provided by Mr Butterill, in the school grounds on Cumberland Avenue, close to where they believe hedgehogs roam.

This was then covered with leaves and branches to provide further insulation.

Doug said: “I have three hedgehogs visiting my garden in Birchin Lane!

“It would be great if we could make this area of Nantwich into a hedgehog sanctuary, with the children’s help we may succeed.”
