A young farm vet from Nantwich is looking forward to global travel thanks to a Reaseheath College scholarship.
Sara Pedersen, who works for Nantwich Veterinary Group, was awarded a £2,000 John Platt Travel Scholarship at The Cheshire Show.
She will use the scholarship to gain a deeper insight into the prevention and treatment of lameness in dairy cattle.
And she hopes her new knowledge will help Cheshire farmers reduce lameness in their herds.
The 31-year-old, of Bickley near Whitchurch, plans to train with leading Holstein cattle foot trimmer Karl Burgi in Wisconsin, USA.
Her visit has been arranged in conjunction with the veterinary research unit at the University of Wisconsin Madison.
Sara is responsible for Nantwich Vets’ Farm Academy, the farmer education division of the practice.
She is also one of the key professionals who deliver the RDPE Skills Cheshire programme.
The John Platt scholarship is in memory of the former chair of Reaseheath Governors and former chairman, president and honorary life warden of the Cheshire Agricultural Society, who died earlier this year.
Cheshire Show director Keith Thomas said Sara had been an outstanding candidate and had shown the drive, ambition and desire to seek out new information and technology which would benefit the Cheshire farming community.
Sara said: “It has been a great privilege to receive this scholarship.
“I am looking forward to visiting Wisconsin and to learning new ideas which can transfer back to Cheshire’s dairy units.”
The John Platt Travel Scholarship is awarded annually and is aimed at encouraging young agriculturists to gain knowledge which will benefit Cheshire’s farming and rural communities.
