A man died when his car collided with a lorry on the A500 bypass in Nantwich.
The crash closed the busy single carriageway route between the Cheerbrook and Peacock roundabouts at Willaston.
The incident happened shortly before 5am today (December 23) and forced police to close the main road both directions between the A51 and A534 connections.
The car involved was a silver Vauxhall Astra, driven by a man aged in his 50s from the Crewe area.
He suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Leighton Hospital where he later died. His family have been informed.
Fire crews from Cheshire Fire and Rescue were called out to cut him free.
The driver of the truck, a white DAF articulated lorry with trailer, was not seriously injured.
Police have closed both lanes of the road between Newcastle Road and the A534 Crewe Road, and diversions are in place.
“Motorists are advised that there are delays and congestion in the area,” said a Cheshire Police spokeswoman.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or have any information which could help the investigation.
