Snugburys at Nantwich unveils giant straw “Dalek” A51 sculpture

Those straw men at Snugburys near Nantwich have been hitting the headlines again – this time with a giant Dalek sculpture.

The popular ice cream farm, on the A51 at Wardle, decided their 2013 structure should help celebrate 50 years of Dr Who!

A spokesman for Snugburys said: “At the beginning of the year we were inundated with suggestions for this years Straw Feature.

“By far the most popular suggestion was a feature to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr Who!”

So the Sadler family, who run Snugburys, agreed with Harbrook Engineering’s Mike Harper to build a 35ft Dalek.

Now it is towering over the A51 Chester road on the outskirts of Nantwich – with images of it making national and international news.

“We believe it took around 700 man-hours to fabricate the steel frame, pack the straw and for the first time ever introduce moving parts and audio,” added the spokesman.

The feature is made from six tons of straw and five tons of steel.

Snugburys have also developed a special “DaLICK” cone now on sale from the ice cream shop.

A percentage of sales from the cones will go to Cancer Research UK.

It’s the latest scuplture to prove a massive hit. Last year, they created a giant cyclist to celebrate Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France.

They have also created Big Ben, the Millennium Eye, and a giant Meerkat.
