A new road layout off the M6 for Nantwich and Crewe could unlock the potential for new jobs in South Cheshire, council chiefs claim. Plans for the new road layout on the A500 approach and around junction 16 roundabout and slip roads could start this autumn.
A man has died after the van he was driving towards Nantwich collided with a lorry on the A500. The accident closed the A500 last night (April 24) between the junction 16 of the M6 and the roundabout to Crewe and Nantwich.
Safety work has been carried out on the A500 footbridge at Willaston in Nantwich, after residents’ complaints. Broken street lights and a lack of gritting during dark, icy periods had left the bridge in a dangerous state, residents said.
Plans for the Crewe Green Link Road to the A500 are back on after the Chancellor backed the scheme today. George Osbourne said he and the Department for Transport will fund 60 per cent, (£16.5m) of the £27million cost of the road.
The cause of a huge fire at a Nantwich scrap metal yard which brought large parts of the town to a standstill, remains a mystery. Cheshire Fire and Rescue investigators have completed a six-week probe into the blaze at Garratt’s Metals, on Alvaston Business Park.

Drivers are being warned of long delays after a lorry accident on the A500/A51 roundabout near Reaseheath College, Nantwich. The incident is ongoing and police and highways officers have closed off the roundabout in all directions as well as Barony Road into Nantwich. A police spokeswoman confirmed the lorry overturned and crashed into a lamp-post before spilling its load of grit across the carriageway.
