Residents’ “justified anger” at Cheshire East over the lived-in housing estate which lost its planning permission was “probably a significant factor” in Labour losing the Crewe Central by-election, a councillor said.
Labour’s Connor Naismith, who represents Crewe West, was speaking after the Conservatives snatched the neighbouring Crewe Central seat from Labour on Thursday.

The Conservatives have stunned Labour by winning the Crewe Central seat in the Cheshire East Council by-election.
Local businessman Roger Morris took the seat, which has always been a Labour stronghold, polling 335 votes.

A Crewe councillor has quit Cheshire East Council meaning the town faces the prospect of a by-election in the near future.
Anthony Critchley (Lab), who has represented Crewe Central on Cheshire East since 2019, resigned from the council last week.
Family man Jake Lomax is standing for Labour Party in next week’s Bunbury ward Cheshire East Council by-election.
The 44-year-old, who lives in Bunbury with his family, has worked in manufacturing, defence and financial services for many years.
Alpraham resident Mark Sharkey has been chosen by Green Party as candidate in next week’s Bunbury ward be-election.
The seat – which covers the communities of Acton, Alpraham, Aston, Barbridge, Church Minshull and Reaseheath and Bunbury, was vacated by former Cheshire East Council Leader Michael Jones.
Cllr Mark Ireland-Jones has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to stand in the forthcoming Cheshire East by-election seat of Bunbury.
The by-election was called after former Cheshire East Council Leader Michael Jones announced he was quitting as councillor in December.
