Environmental groups fear the slurry will now be washed into the nearby River Weaver, causing more pollution and fish deaths.

It comes after a large number of dead fish, birds and debris were washed up along riverside park areas in the town due to several pollution incidents.

RSPCA bosses in Nantwich are urging people to be on their guard after a swan was shot and killed on the River Weaver near Winsford.

The adult female bird was spotted on the river and taken to Stapele Grange wildlife centre where x-rays (pictured) confirmed she had been shot in the head by an air rifle.
