In 2018 Crewe residents were promised a £48m Royal Arcade masterplan, a new cinema, gym, restaurants, shops, a 450 space multi storey car park and a new bus station, off Victoria Street and Queensway, by Christmas 2020.

We are now in 2023 and what have we got?

Temporary bus station in Crewe to operate from January 4

A temporary bus station will be in use in Crewe from Wednesday January 4 as work to complete the first phase of the Cheshire East Council’s Royal Arcade scheme enters the next stage.

The existing bus station will be closed and eight temporary bus stands will operate alongside temporary passenger shelters, cycle stands and facilities for bus drivers.

Cheshire East are planning to close and build housing on two of the main car parks in Crewe town centre, Delamere Street and Chester Street.

The lost car parking spaces will be replaced by a six-storey 390 place car park, on the Royal Arcade development site in the town centre, costing Cheshire East taxpayers a huge £11,315,315.

So Cheshire East Council has commissioned a huge public art piece to adorn the side of the Royal Arcade Bus Station as we were told by a fellow Crewe Councillor at Wednesday’s full Council meeting!

Elected members at the meeting looked bemused – many of us knew nothing about it! (It appears we missed the email sent out late the previous afternoon).

Building work will begin in January on Crewe’s new bus station and multi-storey car park and the scheme should be completed by August 2023 now planning permission has been granted.

That was the claim of the agent representing the developer at Wednesday’s meeting of Cheshire East’s strategic planning board.
