Cheshire East Council is to receive a £17.6m financial support package from the government after the authority announced it had worryingly low reserves.
The cash-strapped council applied to the government for the exceptional financial support in the form of a capitalisation direction earlier this month.

People in crisis across Cheshire East and others needing help are turning to local libraries for support and advice.
Some vulnerable people have picked up food and others have received items such as duvets and hot water bottles after seeking help in Cheshire East libraries, according to a council document.
A new support service for local carers of people with dementia is being offered by St Luke’s Hospice in Cheshire.
Weekly Dementia Carers’ workshops at the hospice in Winsford will allow carers to meet others, share experiences and gain practical advice and support from nurses at the hospice.

Cheshire East paid out more than £160 million in Covid-related support – and £37,000 has been identified as going to fraudsters.
Councils across the country fell victim to fraudulent claims related to the pandemic as they dealt with millions of pounds of government grants.
Cheshire East Council is inviting businesses to apply for funding of up to £6,000 through the government’s Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant scheme.
The scheme provides one-off grants to support eligible rate-paying hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses experiencing difficulties because of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

Some Cheshire East residents won’t have to pay any council tax from next April following changes being made to the support scheme.
At present people in receipt of benefits such as jobseeker’s allowance or income support get 75% of their council tax paid under the council tax support scheme.
Cheshire East Council has launched a consultation on plans to boost council tax support scheme offer by £3.37m over the next three years for families on low incomes.

A massive 37% more working age households applied for council tax support in Cheshire East during the pandemic.
In May 2019, 9,306 working age households applied for the support.
