The talented straw sculptors at Snugburys in Nantwich have created their own tribute to an amazing year for UK cycling.
This magnificent sculpture of a cyclist on a track was unveiled this week in the field by the A51 in Hurleston, Nantwich.
And in the week of Bradley Wiggins’ famous victory in the 2012 Tour de France, it’s the perfect celebration of a sport taking the nation by storm.
The full cycling sculpture weighs seven tons and is around 35ft high.
Creator Mike Harper and the Harbrook Engineering team have been working on it since March and included a trip to the Manchester Velodrome, where they met Chris Moulson who the feature is based on.
The sculpture is also in honour of a group of local amateur cyclists who are raising money for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) and local hospices, Douglas Macmillan and St Luke’s.
A percentage of sales from Snugburys big three scoop ice cream cones will support the group and raise money for their charities.
A spokesman for Snugburys said: “To say we are ecstatic with this year’s straw feature is an understatement!”
“Thanks to Mike Harper and the Harbrook Engineering team’s incredible talent along with the Snugburys straw stuffing teams efforts – we think this could be one to top them all!
“We are over the moon for Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky and have our fingers crossed for this year’s Olympic Team, many of whom are local to us here at Snugburys.”
