A Lee Trundle goal consigned Nantwich Town to defeat at Marine in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

The 36-year-old former Swansea City forward capitalised on a Caspar Hughes error to fire the winner.

Joe Guest had earlier cancelled out Will Jones’ penalty opener with his first Dabbers goal of the season.

Nantwich, captained by the impressive Charlie Raglan, dominated the first half, bossing possession and threatening the Mariners goal on numerous occasions.

Harry Clayton seized upon a loose clearance by goalkeeper Ryan McMahon in the opening exchanges, only to fire wide from 18 yards.

Another McMahon mistake went unpunished moments later, as the stopper dropped a simple catch onto the shin of Niall Maguire, which deflected the ball inches wide.

Overlapping full-back Aaron Cole then spurned a glorious one-on-one chance, slicing his effort high and wide from close range.

Clayton almost broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time, but the Crewe Alexandra loanee’s fizzing effort from 25 yards whistled just past the post.

Marine opened the scoring six minutes into the second period, when Jones coolly converted from the penalty spot, after Hughes was harshly punished for an apparent foul on Nick Rogan.

The Dabbers were level on 64 minutes, as Guest played a neat one-two with Tom Bentham, before finishing well inside the six-yard box.

Trundle almost restored parity immediately, but his cheeky lob landed just wide of Jon Brain’s goal.

However, Trundle, who moved to the Arriva Stadium from Chester City on Thursday, did beat Brain with 21 minutes remaining.

Jones dispossessed Hughes on the edge of the penalty area and then squared the ball to Trundle to lash into the top corner from 16 yards.

The Dabbers, who host Witton Albion tomorrow (Easter Monday) drop one place to 17th, while Marine remain seventh.

Nantwich: Brain; Cole, Bailey, Raglan, Dicker; Maguire, (Devenny 89) Hughes; Clayton, Hudson (Lane 74), Guest; Bentham (Wilson 82). Subs: Jones, Foster.
