33rd Worm Charming Championships, Willaston

Villagers in Nantwich are gearing up for one of the wackiest events of the year – the World Worm Charming Championships.

Willaston Primary School will host the 34th annual Championships from 2pm on Saturday June 22.

More than 200 people are expected to enter the event which sees each have a small 3×3 metre plot of land.

From this they need to charm as many worms from the ground as possible in 30 minutes, without digging or using substances like water.

It has become a global event over the years, featuring competitors from around the world on several TV shows.

A regulatory body enforces 18 rules governing all aspects of Worm Charming.

The International Federation of Charming Worms and Allied Pastimes (IFCWAP) also  looks after other zany sports such as indoor hand gliding, underwater Ludo and ice tiddly-winks!

And this year, Worm Charming organisers are expecting it to be just as big, with plans in place to cater for hundreds of spectators.

The charming starts at 2pm, and official count will be from 2.30pm with trophies expected to be handed out at around 4pm.

There will also be a variety of entertainment in the main arena before Worm Charming and during the count, plus browse various stalls.

Gates open at 1pm. Disabled parking is available on-site, otherwise follow road signs to alternative parking.

Admission is £1, concessions 50p.

Plot fees are £5 subject to availability. Any plots unclaimed 10 minutes prior to the commencement of Worm Charming will be re-issued.
