Parish councillors fighting the proposed Muller Homes “Nantwich South” development, have ditched plans to employ a barrister at a public inquiry.

Stapeley Parish Council said it has made the decision on “the advice of its legal adviser”, but refused to clarify those reasons.

The move will baffle many residents in Stapeley who are fighting the proposals.

Th council has been adamant for the last 12 months that it was prepared to spend up to £20,000 on a top planning barrister to fight their cause.

This was emphasised just 12 days ago at a public meeting in Stapeley community hall.

In a statement released this weekend, the council said: “Detailed written evidence has been provided by the parish council to the Inspector.

“The parish council will now proceed on the basis of presentation by an appointed parish councillor who will give oral evidence.

“The council looks forward to the support of Cheshire East Council and local residents and local organisations in supporting its stance.

“At the parish council meeting on March 6 in the community hall, residents will have an opportunity to ask questions under the public question time slot.”

The council declined to explain the reasons behind the decision.

Muller Homes appealed to the Planning Inspectorate after its initial applications for the first phase of their “Nantwich South” village proposal were not decided in time.

The inspector ordered a 4-day public inquiry due to the controversial nature of the plans for 1,100 homes, businesses, school and village green on land between Peter de Stapleigh Way, London Road and Broad Lane.

The inquiry was due to be held at Macclesfield Town Hall until a strong campaign by residents, local councillors and the MP Edward Timpson forced Cheshire East to move it nearer.

It will now take place at the Crewe Municipal Buildings, starting at 10am on Tuesday February 18. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
