Blyth FA Cup - Nantwich Town's Weaver Stadium, pre-season games, community football

Nantwich Town slipped to their second home defeat in four days after being beaten 3-0 by Stamford, writes Richard Scott.

It was a case of two very different halves for the Dabbers who were the better side in the opening 45 minutes at the Weaver Stadium.

But Stamford took control after the break and goals from Jon Challinor, Cameron Powell and Ryan Robbins earned the visitors three points.

Nantwich started well and won a free kick on five minutes when Vinnie Mukendi was brought down late. However, Max Harrop’s shot was straight at goalkeeper Richard Knight.

Harrop won a corner from a break down the wing, but it was cleared eventually as the Dabbers started to put pressure on the visitors.

On 19 minutes Harry Clayton, who was looking to follow up his impressive performance on Tuesday, burst down the wing. His cross was cleared as it looked to find Mukendi in the area.

Thee minutes later Clayton’s cross did find Mukendi, Lewis Carr blocked his shot.

From the corner, Adam Jones timed his run to perfection but his header went the wrong side of the post.

Clayton’s efforts deserved a goal in the first half. On 27 minutes the tricky winger got through on goal, but his shot was well saved by Knight.

A.Jones had another chance on 29 minutes when Pepper swung the ball in, but his header found the keeper’s hands.

Pepper almost put through his own net when his back pass sailed over Terry Smith and hit the bar.

Against the run of play, Stamford took the lead a minute before half-time.

Ellis Myles broke down the byline and a cross found Challinor who was able to poke the ball in past Smith.

The Dabbers could have levelled soon after the restarts when Pepper’s free kick was headed on by Mukendi to White, but he miscued his volley.

It was a telling miss as the visitors went 2-0 up a few minutes later.

A Stamford corner found Cameron Powell at the near post unmarked to power home past Smith.

It knocked the stuffing out of Nantwich, and the visitors wrapped up the points on 71 minutes when sub Ryan Robbins broke through and slotted in the bottom corner of the goal.

Harrop’s volley into the ground was palmed over by Knight, the resulting corner was cleared as the hosts looked for a way back into the game.

In the last minute, Jordan Johnson had a chance when Adam Jones headed on, but the substitute couldn’t direct his header on goal.

Danny Johnson’s will look to bounce back in 48 hours when they travel to face newly promoted Ramsbottom United on Bank Holiday Monday, kick off 3pm.
