A major road junction upgrade in Nantwich has been completed, ending weeks of disruption.

Work to the junction of Barony Road and Beam Street began in March to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and support traffic flow.

Cheshire East Council says the work included replacing out-dated electrical cables and poles and installing energy-efficient LED pedestrian and cycle signalling to add to existing traffic lights.

Tactile paving and audible signals are also in place to help people with impaired sight and hearing to cross.

Tactile devices in each push button box indicate when the ‘green man’ signal is showing.

Existing pedestrian and cyclist crossing lanes have been widened.

And a new feature is the intelligent traffic signal technology known as ‘Mova’ (microprocessor optimised vehicle actuation).

This is designed to reduce queuing traffic by synchronising signal timings with changing traffic flows throughout the day.

Gary Mallin, contract manager for Cheshire East Highways, said: “I wish to express my thanks to motorists, local businesses and residents for their patience.

“This has been an important project at a difficult road junction and we hope the residents of Nantwich will agree the new scheme brings with it significant improvements to traffic flow and safety.

“The intelligent traffic lights system will help reduce queuing traffic at peak times to keep vehicles moving through the town.

“The new facilities at the junction will also help to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the crossings.

“We are delighted to have delivered this much improved scheme within the agreed timeframe.”
