Nantwich Town players face Colwyn Bay tonight with assistant boss Neil Sorvel’s words ringing in their ears.
Sorvel said the disappointment with the 3-3 away draw at Whitby at the weekend is a sign of where the club is now.
Nantwich had been behind twice in the game but had taken the lead with 15 minutes to go, only for the hosts to equalise in the last minutes to go.
And he pointed to the timing of their opponents’ strikes – one on 45 minutes, another in the 90th minute.
Former Crewe Alexandra star Sorvel said: “We can’t fault the lads’ character, they were down to 10 men for the majority of the game.
“Conceding a goal at any time is not great obviously. But to concede on 45 minutes and then 90 minutes is pretty gut wrenching to be honest with you.
“Conceding on half time makes morale lower than it should be during the team talk and on 90 minutes …you have no time to reverse it.
“We have to move on and look at the positives.
“We are now in a place where we are disappointed with an away draw and that shows the quality that we have got.
“Let’s put it into context, we played two-thirds of the game with 10 men and we are still disappointed to not have won.”
Nantwich were missing Steve Jones through injury, a key player for the Dabbers in the opening games of the season.
However, Sorvel says Nantwich’s strength in depth came to the fore.
“We were missing lads and we didn’t look any weaker for it. Especially in the front three positions and the number 10 role, I was pleased with how that panned out.
“The competition for places is very strong and regardless of who we play in any of those positions, we are always going to have quality there.
“You can see there is real competition when we make any changes, we like that as a management team.
“We are happy to make changes an hour into the game because you know you have quality to bring off the bench and make a difference in the game.
“At this level, it’s highly possible to have a weak bench but for us it’s a really strong bench and we have got lads who can come in and change the game for us.”
Sorvel also praised Matty Kosylo, who picked up the man of the match award.
“He scores and creates chances for others, that is the type of footballer he is,” added Sorvel.
“He is a committed type of player, he would keep going all day long for you, he has great energy levels.”
Kick off tonight (September 8) at Weaver Stadium is 7.45pm
