Macmillan donation by SP Energy in Willaston

Big-hearted electricity workers in Willaston were sparked into charity action – thanks to the local social club.

SP Energy Networks employees donated hundreds of pounds to Macmillan nurses after Willaston Social Club opened up their car park.

Andy Oakes, senior project manager with SP Energy Networks, came up with the idea when they spent several days replacing ageing electrical networks along Coppice Road and Wistaston Road, in Willaston.

The works forced them to close the road, so they asked staff at the club if the car park could be used by residents.

The club agreed – and Andy and contractors put their hands in their pockets to say thanks.

“If you know Willaston you’ll know how bad the parking is near to the chip shop,” said Andy.

“As we were needing to shut the road I spoke to Rachel Anderson (Secretary at Willaston social club) if we could use their car park for the residents for the duration of the works, which they agreed to.

“I noticed they do a lot of money raising for Macmillan nurses.

“I offered them a gift of £150 towards this. Dutton Contractors, our service partner we use to carry out the works, then matched our offer for a great cause!”
