Crewe & Nantwich RUFC scrum - under 16s win Cheshire Shield, beat Walsall

Crewe & Nantwich RUFC romped to a comfortable 38-18 victory at home to Walsall in Midlands 1 West.

And the Vagrants side did it without their two influential Australians, Ben Ham and James Wivell, who had returned home for Christmas.

Dan Hull and Scott Cann were drafted in along with in-form Matt Wright at 2nd row and winger Eddie Spibey.

Crewe began well, from a line-out they took the ball forward with a series of pick and drives.

Second row Bugzy Davies and prop Chris Sproston combined before Wright scored the first try to the left of the posts, converted by Toby Ward.

Walsall responded with a long penalty kick against the wind by full-back, Weston.

Josh Howard broke from defence, linked with left winger Charlie Hutchings, who chipped over the defence forcing their fullback to concede a scrum on the five-metre line.

Several scrums later, and centre Tom Roberts smashed his way forward and provided a quick feed to Bugzy Davies who scored to the left of the Walsall posts.

The try was converted by Ward with the score now at 14-3 to Crewe.

The final try of the half was an individual effort by wing Hutchings who burst down the wing to score a great try, converted by Ward.

Walsall fought back with another penalty kicked by Weston.

From a scrum just inside the Crewe half, Hull fed Allsop and then the backline to Ward making ground into the Walsall 22.

He linked with wing Tim Cowap who rounded his winger to score in the right hand corner.

Walsall scored a try with a break from their No 8 down the right hand touchline, moving it to the left hand side for their winger to score a good converted try.

Crewe led 26-13 with 24 minutes left, and sealed the win with a penalty try after a series of scrums on the Walsall line.

Walsall scored another unconverted try but the final score went to Crewe’s dominant forwards.

Dan Lawrence won a line-out, they set a driving maul and trundled the Walsall pack over the line for prop Ian Merrill to score.

Crewe & Nantwich sit 10th in the league, just 10 points off top spot.
