Detectives in Crewe have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a man who was found unconscious in an alleyway died in hospital.
The 51-year-old local victim, who has not been named, was found in an alley off Edleston Road at 9.30pm last night (August 31).
Police and ambulance attended and the victim was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital, but he died a short time later.
Officers arrested a man earlier today (September 1) in relation to the incident.
The 20-year-old suspect, from the local area, is currently in custody helping officers with their inquiries.
Police and paramedics found the victim with serious injuries in a service area at the rear of a local convenience store off Edleston Road.
A Home Office post mortem is expected to take place later today (September 1).
Officers have now notified next of kin, but formal identification has not yet taken place.
Detective Superintendent Jon Betts, from Cheshire Police Major Investigations Team, said: “I would like to reassure the public that at the current time this appears to be an isolated incident.
“Investigations are currently ongoing at the scene, and as a result of the incident a police cordon is in place on Edleston Road and the road is currently closed in both directions, the closure is expected to remain in place for most of the day.”
