The six-day festival was opened by Mayor of Nantwich Cllr Andrew Martin and organiser Nigel Stonier.
There were performances from Winkie Thin (pictured) and Nigel Stonier & Thea Gilmore.
The festival, which runs until this Sunday October 16, will feature a mix of international names and new acts in music, poetry and literature.
Headliners include Dr John Cooper Clarke, Eddi Reader, Stornoway, Thea Gilmore, The Travelling Band, ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris with Danny And The Champions Of The World, Smoke Fairies and Nigel Stonier.
On Sunday, there will be a ‘Poetry Slam’ event sponsored by South Cheshire College.
Across the week, there will be a variety of poetry-related events culminating in the “Slam”.
Entrants from across the country will read their original work, often in a theatrical manner, where three judges will score their performance.
Among the judges will be South Cheshire College Head of English, James Eagney, who will be joining two other judges at the Railway Hotel in Nantwich on Sunday (October 16).
Connor Owen, who is studying A Levels at South Cheshire College, will be making his debut at the Words & Music Festival Poetry Slam.
Connor, pictured below, said: “As an A Level Drama and English Literature student, Poetry Slams give me a chance to combine two things that I love.
“The poem that I will be entering into Words & Music Festival Poetry Slam is top secret!
“I’m really looking forward to it and I’d love to win.”
Organiser of the Poetry Slam Helen Kay, said: “There has been lots of interest in this year’s Poetry Slam following on from the success of last year.
“Young poets provide an alternative voice so we are keen to get them involved.”
James Eagney added: “We are pleased to be supporting Words & Music Festival and hope our support has encouraged more young people to enter the Poetry Competition and Slam.”
