Oh yay, oh yay – a big shout out to Nantwich Town councillors!
For they have voted to appoint an official Nantwich Town Crier – and are now crying out for applications, if you think you’re loud enough!
The town has had an unofficial town crier, John Parsons, for several years, courtesy of the rotary club, but the position was never formerly ratified.
But now the council plans to make a formal appointment to ensure a Town Crier attends the major events around the town throughout the year.
Councillors believe it will add to the attraction of the town, and a job description is being drawn up to start a selection process.
Mayor Cllr David Marren said: “Events attract people into the town, and a town crier certainly adds to the ambience.
“It’s for the tourists, and makes it a more pleasant place to visit and shop.”
Although the new appointment would not be a paid position, councillors agreed the new Town Crier should be paid a small ‘honorarium’ for his/her work, as well as expenses for duties which incur travel costs.
Events the new Crier would attend include Holly Holy Day, Mayor Making, Weaver Wander, Nantwich Show, Nantwich Food Festival, Societies Spectacular, Christmas Lights Switch-on and other Mayoral and Saturday town square occasions.
Nantwich Town Council clerk Ian Hope said: “There are two organisations which represent town criers and organise competitions on their behalf, The Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers and The Loyal Company of Town Criers.
“These organisations do not regard the post of Town Crier as a full-time or part-time job but consider it to be a voluntary position.
“Ideally, the successful applicant will live locally and be expected to have a good local knowledge with an understanding of the town and its history, in order to answer queries by visitors regarding local attractions and facilities.”
Cllr John Lewis questioned the need for one, asking if the town would be any “worse off” for not having one.
But Cllr Peter Groves said: “I think it would really add something to the town in terms of ambience, and if someone is giving up their time for the role we should be paying expenses.”
A job description and person specification for the role are to be published shortly!
A bit like clowns, creepy I feel
ALL the girls at Rosies Beauty Salon vote for Dev Hobson!!

Looks like a fun role for a community minded person. I’d definitely be up for applying.
I vote for Dev Hobson! Fantastic guy!
Hopefully, the successful candidate will be better turned out than the correct one, who has always stuck me as looking rather scruffy 🙁
Yes that’s all we need, more noise in the town! Every week there are more buskers.
Never shop in Nantwich now, it’s not relaxing at all.
