Crewe and Nantwich RUFC 1sts were knocked out of the Midlands Intermediate Cup, losing 46-28 away at Kidderminster.
Bad traffic on the M6 motorway caused a delay to the start, and it didn’t get much better for Crewe as they rushed into the kick off.
They were under the cosh from the off against a side who had won all their games so far this season, averaging 30 points a game.
Kidderminster’s big forwards made ground which was improved by their fast direct back line, they had recruited well from previous fixtures.
The opening try soon came and was followed by two more and before Crewe had time to settle they were 19-0 down.
The visitors rallied and enjoyed some good phases of play but from one of these, Kidderminster turned the ball over in their 22 for a break away try from their strong right wing to make it 24-0 and put the game beyond reach before the break.
Crewe kept working and were rewarded by a try from scrum half George Colebourne from a strong break off a scrum, converted by fly half Jim Creighton for 24-7.
Kidderminster scored the final try of the half leaving it 29-7 at half time.
And any hopes Crewe had of a come back were dashed when the home side scored early in the second half to extend the lead to 34-7.
This was followed by a good try from Crewe off a line out hooker Eli Woodward being driven over, converted by Creighton 34-14.
The home side then scored twice (one of which was a penalty try) which sealed the game at 46-14.
Crewe to their credit had the last say with tries by skipper Elliot Alstom and young full back Liam McKinnon, both well converted by Creighton, to make the final score 46-28.
Crewe were well beaten on the day and will need to regroup for next weekend’s league fixture away at Stafford.
A plus point on the day was young colt Eddie Cooper making his 1st team debut, and performing well, another product of Crewe’s strong youth section.
