The British Hen Welfare Trust team in Cheshire is on track to rehome the 1,000th hen of 2019 at their collection event this weekend (April 7).
So far this year, the team has helped send more than 940 hens off to pet homes, and save them from slaughter.
The BHWT rehomes more than 60,000 ex-commercial hens every year and the majority of these hens have spent their lives in cages, laying eggs day in day out to be sold in supermarkets or put into processed foods.
At 18 months old their egg laying begins to slow down so they are sent to slaughter.
But the BHWT takes them to one of 40 pop-up rehoming points around the UK where people will come to rehome them.
David Marek, BHWT Cheshire Co-ordinator, said “As a volunteer I always look forward to the rehoming.
“They are great feel good days and so rewarding knowing that lives have been saved.
“The early starts are more than worth it and it’s wonderful to take the hens from their cages in the morning and see those same hens off with their new owners in the afternoon.”
The charity are holding a rehoming in Nantwich on Sunday April 7, and there are lots of hens without homes to go to.
If you have space in your coop and would like to give a few hens a retirement filled with fresh air, green grass and sunshine, please ensure you’re registered with the BHWT at https://support.bhwt.org.uk/RegisterAHen.aspx and give Hen Central a call on 01884 860084.
