Boyband heart-throb Jaymi Hensley is stepping into the coat of many colours as the UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat arrives at Crewe Lyceum Theatre on September 17-21.
Four decades since Bill Kenwright’s first production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic biblical story began, the tour is once again enjoying sell-out performances across the country.
Jaymi, who enjoyed success through ITV’s The X Factor with band Union J, currently stars as Joseph.
Retelling the Biblical story of Joseph, his 11 brothers and the coat of many colours, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is full of life and colour.
It features hit songs including Go, Go, Go Joseph, Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door to Me.
Union J star Jaymi said: “Joseph has got something special.
“I approached Joseph, with the message that as long as you stand by who you are, eventually the rest of the world will see how wonderful you are too.”
The musical started out in 1968 as a 15-minute cantata and was the first of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals to be performed publicly.
It recently received enhanced choreography by Gary Lloyd, known for music to theatre crossover and as creative director for performers including Sir Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Kelly Clarkson, Robbie Williams and more.
Gary Lloyd said: “Bill Kenwright’s beautifully biblical production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the first show I ever saw at the theatre.
“It inspired me to pursue a career on stage, so I was beyond excited to be working with Bill and Henry to bring this 40-year family classic into the 21st century for another and future generations.”
As Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat hits 50 this year, Jaymi also praised the timeless brilliance of its writers, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
“They wrote this musical at university! The songs are timeless. I think that is the one word to use. You have songs here that, in 2019, don’t have to be modernised.
“We’re not changing anything at all. That’s testament to how well written they are. I know how dated the music I released in the last seven years is already, just listening to the charts.
“I’m really looking forward to going to places I’ve never been before and finding new audiences.
“I love being on the road. The stage is what I love. I love being live in front of an audience, so to do it 10 times a week, I couldn’t be happier.”
