Crewe and Nantwich have kicked off their new Staffordshire and Cheshire Korfball Association League (SaCKA) 2019/2020 season.

This year, three clubs will be vying for the top spot, following a hotly contested 2018/19 season which saw Keele University Korfball Club come out on top.

Korfball is the world’s only truly mixed sex sport, where each team includes four women and four men whose objective, like basketball or netball, is to throw the ball through a hoop.

Founded in 1902, the sport is growing in popularity across the UK.

Crewe and Nantwich Korf (CanKorf) will be competing against Castle Korfball Club (KC) and Keele University KC.

The 2018/9 season saw a strong finish for an inexperienced Keele side, who won six games and drew two.

Newcomers to the league University of Birmingham 4 came in second, with Crewe and Nantwich taking third place.

Leah Elston-Thompson, Communications Officer for SaCKA, said: “It is an exciting time for korfball.

“In 2019, for the first time, the national finals were covered by the BBC.

“However, the hype is not just happening on a national level, Staffordshire and Cheshire has a long history of korfball success that shows no sign of slowing down.”

Felix Freeman-Davies, Club Captain at Keele University Korfball Club, said: “Last season, our club quadrupled in size, showing how popular the sport is for both men and women.

“Winning the league demonstrated how quickly players can develop in korfball, from never having heard of the sport to scoring goals and being part of a winning team.

“We’ve had some fantastic new players joining this season and may the best team win!”

All three teams in Staffordshire and Cheshire are recruiting for players to join their growing clubs.

Castle Korfball Club trains on a Tuesday at Gordon Banks Sports Centre from 8pm-10pm, Crewe and Nantwich KC also trains on a Tuesday at Malbank School from 8pm-9:30pm.

New players are welcome to come along.
