A man is fighting for his life after falling from a bridge onto the A500 below near Nantwich.
Police had to close the busy Shavington bypass after motorists reported seeing a man unconscious in the carriageway.
It was shut close to the bridge where the B5071 Crewe Road spans the A500 near the Crewe Alexandra soccer centre in Shavington.
One eyewitness described how he was driving back to Nantwich and saw a man lying face down in the road at about 8.45pm last night (July 1).
“I thought he has either jumped or fallen from the bridge, or has been hit by a car,” said the motorist, a Nantwich resident.
“I pulled in to the next lay-by to call the emergency services but seconds later police and paramedics flashed by me to the scene.
“There were a couple of vehicles at the scene, a car and transit, but these were released by police.”
A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: “At 8.40pm on Monday July 1, police were called by the Ambulance Service to a report a man had fallen from a bridge.
“Officers went the scene on the A500 Shavington bypass, just past the Shavington roundabout towards Nantwich, where a 46-year-old man was taken to hospital with numerous injuries.
“The road was closed while the man was treated and taken to hospital where his condition was described as critical.”
The man, who has not been named, is being treated at North Staffordshire Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent.
