Labour councillor Nick Mannion has been re-elected as leader of Cheshire East Council and said he welcomed the return to the cabinet system of governance which comes into force today.
Cllr Mannion was speaking after narrowly holding off a challenge from Conservative Cllr Stewart Gardiner for the leadership.
The former Cheshire East Council leader Michael Jones, who represented Bunbury ward, has died at the age of 61.
Mr Jones was first elected to Cheshire East as the Conservative ward member for Bunbury in 2011 and became council leader the following year.

Bunbury councillor Becky Posnett has quit the Conservative group on Cheshire East Council and is now sitting as a non-grouped independent.
Cllr Posnett, who was elected to Cheshire East in 2023, was deputy whip of the Conservative group.
Crewe & Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan has announced he will NOT stand for the constituency at the next General Election.
The Conservative MP had previously announced he would, but today posted his change of heart on his Facebook page.

Cheshire East Conservative group leader has asked what the council will be consulting on over parking charges because the report is “so short on detail”.
Cllr Janet Clowes also believes the council is missing a big opportunity if it does not explore the option of joining the national parking platform (NPP).

The leader of the Independent group on Cheshire East Council said the Conservative group would be running the council with them if they had agreed to share the leadership.
Cllr Craig Browne’s tweet came after Conservative group leader Janet Clowes said she found it “extraordinary” the Independents had agreed to run the council with Labour again and give residents “four more years of the same”.
Labour have made significant gains on Nantwich Town Council after the local election counts were completed for town and parish councils over the weekend.
With Nantwich now being expanded from two to three wards, there will be five councillors representing each ward.

Nantwich has a completely different make-up on Cheshire East Council following a shock result with three of its four borough councillors being Labour.
Overall, the council remains in no overall control with 33 Conservative councillors, 31 Labour, 16 Independents and 2 Lib Democrats. Labour made six gains overall, and the Tories three.

Teachers striking for better pay and funding took their protest to the offices of Crewe and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan yesterday (February 1).
Dozens of teachers and supporters from across Cheshire East marched through Crewe from the town’s railway station before demonstrating outside the Conservative MP’s office at lunchtime.
Crewe & Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan has announced he intends to stand again in the next general election, likely to be in 2024.
The Conservative MP, making the announcement on social media, had to confirm this month whether he intended to run again to represent the constituency where he has been MP since December 2019.
