More than £1.2 million was paid out in allowances and expenses between 82 Cheshire East councillors in 2021-22, latest figures show.
Cheshire East Council has published details of the allowances paid to elected members during the last financial year, as required by law.

Cheshire East councillors netted more than £1.25 million between them in expenses and allowances in 2020-21, latest figures show.
A basic allowance of £12,351 is paid to each of the 82 elected members, adding up to just short of £1 million.

The Labour-led coalition which currently runs Cheshire East Council has decided to promote a scheme which pays their own members more money, creating an extra cost for the tax payer.

Cheshire East Council Leader Cllr Sam Corcoran received £39,076 in allowances last year — making him the best remunerated councillor in the borough.
Deputy leader Cllr Craig Browne received the next highest amount, taking home £29,177, latest figures show.

Cheshire East councillors have voted to freeze their allowances until May 2021 – but still receive a basic allowance of more than £12,000 each.
The authority’s independent remuneration panel had recommended allowances, paid as compensation for time performing duties in their role, be increased.
