A hedgehog’s horrific death has prompted a warning from RSPCA in Nantwich about the dangers of carelessly discarding fishing tackle.
The juvenile hedgehog was taken to RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre on London Road after he was found entangled in a fishing line in a Nantwich garden by a member of the public on October 2.
Nantwich’s ‘Hedgehog Champion’ has issued a plea to residents to check their bonfires before lighting them.
It follows a rise in the number of burn injuries suffered by hedgehogs that use bonfires as shelter.
A trainee conservationist has become the “Hedgehog Champion” for Nantwich as part of a national campaign to save the endangered species. Jack Riggall, a student at Reaseheath College, is spearheading the South Cheshire arm of the “Hedgehog Street” project.
