A councillor has called on a village pub in Willaston near Nantwich to be saved from demolition.

Owners of the closed Horse Shoe Inn on Newcastle Road have submitted a planning application to knock down the building.

They want permission to build four residential properties on the site.

But Cllr Brian Silvester, who represents Willaston and Rope, wants the building to be classed as a site of historical interest so it can be preserved.

He said: “The pub has been closed for some time.

“I am not against, in principle, this brown field site being developed for housing.

“However, the pub itself should be retained and converted for residential use.

“The building is one of the oldest in the village which is not blessed with many historical buildings.

“The plot where the Horseshoe is situated formed part of the Manor and Lordship of Willaston owned by Ralph Sneyd.

“After his death in 1793 the estate passed to his son who then leased the dwelling house, blacksmith shop and premises to Henry Collier.

“He then sold the premises to Henry Collier in 1861.

“The Parish Council would also like to see the historic building retained.

“I am asking the council to take urgent action to class the building of historical interest and worthy of retention. That should then ensure that it is saved from demolition.”

The application has been submitted by building owners, Robinsons Brewery, based in Manchester.

Cheshire East Council planners are currently considering the plans.
