Phil Parkinson said match-winner PJ Hudson had “toyed” with his emotions in the seconds before hitting the crucial goal against Belper.
Nantwich Town’s 2-1 victory over the bottom club kept the Dabbers just above the relegation zone in Evo-Stik Premier Division.
And although winger Hudson came off the bench to score the goal, Parkinson said it seemed to “take a decade” for the ball to beat keeper Dan Haystead and hit the net.
The Weaver Stadium boss said: “He was weighing it up, he was cool and composed.
“He was taking his time to find his spot. He was playing with my emotions again, so we had a little word with him about that!
“But I don’t care as long as it hits the back of the net. I will take that all day.”
Hudson was due to start against Belper, but a knock meant he was not 100% fit to take his place.
However, his attitude impressed Parkinson as the former Congleton Town man was keen to make an impression off the bench.
“He felt he could still contribute from the bench, what a great attitude that is,” Parkinson added.
“We have got four first-teamers missing in Kyle Blake, Cliff Moyo and two suspended in Mat Bailey and Steve Jones.
“They are massive players for us. Mat would be a starter every day of the week.
“We have massively missed Mat, that vocal presence at the back.
“Luckily we have got Jon Moran in and he is an absolute man mountain for a young boy.
“But when you are missing four big players like that, it takes its toll.
“PJ still wanted to contribute and what a contribution he has made!”
A win was essential on Saturday. The result lifted Nantwich to 19th place and also condemned the Derbyshire club to relegation.
“We always go into games trying to play. But we had to battle first.
“Obviously it was a huge game for them so it was a massive win game for us – nothing less, which I emphasized to the players.”
