The Russian State Ballet and Opera House brings Verdi’s opera masterpiece La Traviata to Crewe Lyceum next month.
The tragedy in three acts features arias and music performed in Italian by a cast and an orchestra comprising more than 30 musicians.
The performance, which has English subtitles, will be staged on Friday September 11, from 7.30pm.
“La Traviata is an unforgettable, powerful experience that truly belongs in the beautiful settings of the Crewe Lyceum Theatre’s intimate opera house-style auditorium,” said Lyceum marketing manager Gemma Whalley.
La Traviata is adapted from the novel La Dame aux Camélias, by Alexandre Dumas, recounting his true-life affair with demi-mondaine, Marie Duplessis.
Courtesan Violetta’s life is one of endless parties, until young nobleman Alfredo convinces her to live in the country with him.
They are content until Alfredo’s father arrives and tells Violetta the affair is threatening the family’s honour.
Desperate to save Alfredo from disgrace Violetta leaves their rural idyll and returns to Paris and into the arms of another.
Alexej Ignatow, producer for Amande Concerts Ltd, said: “Opera is sometimes seen as being out of reach.
“But this performance will bring world class opera talent to local audiences in a way that makes opera more accessible than ever.
“For many, seeing an opera is a wonderful and profound experience and one they are keen to repeat.
“I hope this performance will encourage many more people to try opera and discover the magic it creates.”
Tickets for La Traviata at the Crewe Lyceum Theatre on September 11 are on sale at the Box Office or online at www.crewelyceum.co.uk
