Steve Burgin and Anya Hynes - wigs cancer charity

A young mum who suffered cancer as a child has teamed up with a Nantwich hairdresser to support a charity providing real hair wigs to children going through the same harrowing ordeal.

Anya Hynes, from Wrenbury, was just six when she was struck down with aggressive form of cancer called acute myeloid leukaemia and began five rounds of chemotherapy as well as other treatments.

Although she was only given a 50% chance of survival she pulled through.

But the treatments left her with heart damage and caused the loss of her long brown hair.

Eventually her hair returned and now she has made it her mission to support the Little Princess Trust which provides real wigs for children by donating her own hair and raising money.

Anya, 30, said: “The Little Princess Trust provide free wigs to children and young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their own hair through cancer treatments.

“It was terrible for me as a child.

“I was taunted and bullied by a couple of lads because I had cancer and my hair still hadn’t fully grown back.

“Every child undergoing hardship deserve to feel beautiful and confident.

“That’s why I want to raise awareness of the Trust and to help raise donations and encourage people to donate their hair next time they go for a trip to the hairdressers, so it can make more wigs for children.”

For her latest crop, Anya visited Steve Burgin hair salon on Hospital Street in Nantwich.

Her long ‘bob’ was cropped to a pixie cut with fashionable sweeping fringe.

Owner Steve Burgin said: “I was really touched by Anya’s story.

“She has lovely hair but asked for it all to be cropped off really short.

“When I found out later on Facebook her reasons why, I rang to give her back the cost of the cut. What a brave young lady.”

Steve, who has run his salon in Nantwich for 20 years, added: “We have decided to make The Little Princess Trust one of our chosen charities of the year.

“When clients have short cut and donate their hair for wigs we will give the cost back in a donation to the charity.”

After her childhood ordeal, Anya turned to martial arts to build her confidence and became a prize-winning cage fighter.

But she was told she would never be able to have children.

Despite a low fertility rate, she defied doctors once again and gave birth to Isaac.

She treasures every day with the bundle of joy she calls her ‘miracle baby’ now a happy and mischievous 13 months.
