A new health programme for those suffering breathing diseases and conditions is being launched at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.

Everybody Sport and Recreation has teamed up with the Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP) Pulmonary Rehabilitation service to run the project.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an exercise and education programme for patients living with a diagnosed breathing problem.

These could be conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), Bronchiectasis or Pulmonary Fibrosis.

It is an eight-week programme and patients need to attend twice a week to gain maximum benefit.

The aim is to teach patients to manage their symptoms, particularly breathlessness and also increase their exercise ability, making day to day activities a little easier.

The exercise is tailored to each individual patient, and led by specialist respiratory physiotherapists.

Donna Williamson, Senior Manager Health Innovation at Everybody Sport and Recreation, said: “We are delighted to partner with CCICP Pulmonary Rehabilitation service, supporting the expansion of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service into our leisure facility and supporting programme delivery.

“We have worked with Jane Wilmer and the team for many years and this new partnership development will enable the service to cope with patient demand in numbers through increasing provision and access to the programme, whilst offering patients long-term exercise and lifestyle support in coping and managing their condition all under the same roof.”

The programme at Crewe Lifestyle Centre will involve specialist health instructors supporting the exercise elements.

Once patients have completed the Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme, they can continue attending Everybody’s Rehabilitation exercise classes, aiding progression and offering long-term support.

Jane Wilmer, of Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team, added: “It is a much bigger venue for us so we can see more patients more quickly.

“And having the delivery support of Everybody’s Specialist Health Instructors at the centre working alongside us during the sessions allows us to share our expertise, all of which will benefit our patients.”

To access the service, patients need a referral from a GP/practice nurse/integrated respiratory team or respiratory consultant.
