Woman in Black - Crewe Lyceum Theatre - frontage - by Jonathan White

Blackeyed Theatre returned to Crewe Lyceum this weekend with a new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, writes Claire Faulkner.

Directed by Nick Lane, this thrilling and atmospheric production opens with a chilling warning to the audience; that vampires exist.

The production itself had a glorious Victorian, dark gothic feeling to it.

There were no fangs, no fake blood, but there didn’t need to be.

The audience were completely captivated by the live theatrical experience.

This adaption also highlights themes including; the treatment of women, control and the exploitative aspects of Empire.

The set, designed by Victoria Spearing was almost skeletal looking, and effectively served as multiple locations from a Transylvanian Castle, the cargo ship The Demeter to the seaside town of Whitby.

The cast of six did an excellent job covering multiple characters with dialogue which sometimes felt a little heavy in places.

I enjoyed watching Pelé Kelland-Beau as Jonathan Harker, and I thought Marie Osman was wonderful as the troubled Renfield.

However, I must give credit to Laura Hannawin, who stood in to play the roles of Mina and Dr Hennessey, you did an excellent job, your applause was well deserved.
