Crewe and Nantwich ended a disappointing start to their Midlands North (West) 2 season narrowly beating newly promoted Burntwood 23-20.
A first half try from openside flanker Joe Gammage was added to in the second half by skipper and outside centre Josh McShane.
Fly half Jamie Little adding a conversion and three penalties, and Jim Creighton weighed in with a conversion.
These earned Crewe the points for a narrow but well deserved victory against difficult opponents in a much improved performance from previous weeks.
Crewe and Nantwich 2nds also enjoyed a victory, comfortably beating Aselmians 2nds 45-5.
Three tries came from skipper and outside centre Thom Winskill, two from veteran wing Tim Cowap, and a try apiece from wing Jack Anderson and full back Taine Hawthorne.
Anderson also added five conversions to give Crewe a comfortable victory over difficult opposition.
The side was led by captain Thom Winskill and his vice captains Dave Greatbanks, Reuben Mitchell and Chris Maloney.
Crewe and Nantwich Ladies suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 25-19 to Sunderland Ladies.
A four-hour coach trip and a depleted bench meant that the visitors were already facing a challenging fixture, but ultimately it was the power of the Sunderland pack that decided the result.
The damp weather impacted on handling from both sides, and Sunderland punished Crewe in the resulting scrums.
Following a series of penalties conceded by the Black and Whites, Sunderland were to open the scoring early in the first half.
Siobhan Ardern hit back soon after, scoring her first try for the club after a pacey break down the right wing.
Fullback Lauren Vipond added a second under the posts before half time.
For much of the second half, Crewe looked threatening with the ball, manipulating gaps in the Sunderland defence, but struggling to convert territory to points.
Chelsea Hobbs put in an excellent performance to bring the Crewe scrum in check and Jordan Morris kicked well from the tee to keep the score within touching distance.
A yellow card for the home team enabled Nicole Bell to add to the scoresheet, but the score at the final whistle was 25-19 to Sunderland.
Crewe & Nantwich Women have a busy week ahead, facing Broughton Park in the Intermediate Cup on Thursday, followed by Eccles at The Vagrants this weekend.
Meanwhile, Crewe and Nantwich U15 girls earned a stunning 75-10 victory over Stafford U15 girls – despite only being able to field 14 players!
Crewe conceded a try early on but a rousing captain’s team talk got them back on track with attacking defensive lines.
It didn’t give Stafford enough time to play the ball safely and once in contact the ball was turned over time and again.
Crewe took control with a series of tries by dominating through the defence as the scrumhalf offloaded to to the backs to run riot.
This was the theme throughout the game and continued in the second half.
Stafford scored a late consolation through a well worked penalty in the corner for their outside centre.
