Bankruptcy warning from Cheshire East Council finance boss

Cheshire East Council will be effectively bankrupt if the government doesn’t approve the use of exceptional financial support by the end of this financial year, the council’s head of finance said.

The council applied for £17.6m of EFS last February because of the projected overspend this financial year.

CEC facing £27 million budget overspend in 2024-25

Cheshire East Council is facing a predicted overspend of £27 million by the end of the financial year because its children’s and adults’ services are failing to operate within budget.

A report to the finance sub-committee revealed the adults and health committee is forecast to be overspent by £20m at the end of March next year.
