A Nantwich dad-of-two has helped kick-start a £1m appeal to create a new theatre in the heart of Nantwich.

Family lawyer David Lago is backing Nantwich Players in their Buy-a-Brick appeal to build a modern theatre big enough to cater for their growing number of fans.

Their old Quaker meeting house on Love Lane has 82 seats and their hope is to create a two-storey theatre and arts centre with 140 seats and space for bar facilities and exhibitions.

Around £140,000 has been raised so far but a huge amount still needs to be raised if their dream is to become a reality.

Mr Lago, who runs a law practice in Crewe, has bought a stack of bricks and the Players hope other businesses will follow suit.

He said: “I am delighted to offer support to the Players.

“They do such a tremendous amount of good work in Nantwich, not only in staging quality productions, but by offering a platform to young people to pursue a theatrical interest.

“From it they develop a sense of teamwork, discipline and the confidence to project their personality in public, all great life skills.”

Since 1983, the Players have been based in a tiny, 18th century building once used as a council store. They want to flatten it and start work on a new theatre in 2013.

Chairman Jeremy Acklam said: “It’s ambitious but we believe we can get there with the good-hearted support of local businesses and individuals like David Lago.”

Mr Lago’s sons Edward, 22, and Henry, 17, are also youth members at Players.

Financial support can be given to Nantwich Players by buying bricks at £10 each or three for £25.
