Police in Nantwich are hoping to earn the town ArcAngel status by signing up pub bosses to a safer drinking charter.
ArcAngel, which aims to tackle alcohol-related crime, is run by Cheshire Police and agencies including local councils, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and NHS trusts.
Three towns – Chester, Macclesfield and Sandbach – are already established as ArcAngle protected, and Nantwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit are hoping to achieve similar status.
They are in discussions with the dozens of licensed premises in the town to help improve safety and crackdown on underage, irresponsible drinking.
Nantwich Insp Dave Smithers said: “Nantwich already has a good Pubwatch scheme, this is a way of formalising it.
“Premises who sign up to this will be providing certain standards of safety, such as numbers of people in at any one time, number of door staff, responsible bar staff, regular visits from the police and local authorities and so on.
“Our ultimate aim is for Nantwich to be an ArcAngel protected town.”
He said some licencess have already signed up to the agreement, and added the scheme extends to youths found drinking in public places.
“It applies to youngsters and cracking down on those found drinking in street corners and in parks,” added Insp Smithers.
It will mean the ArcAngel logo should become a more familier sight in bars and licensed premises in Nantwich.
As part of our Policing for the Night time Economy, our staff patrol the area’s which are routes commonly used for people to leave the Town Centre. I’ve not been previously aware that this area is a problem and so have tasked the Town Sergeant with cascading this information to the local policing team when working at the time specified in order to monitor and deal with any offences detected. Thanks
