Crewe & Nantwich RUFC’s stunning first half of the season was dented by a cup defeat against Newbold-on-Avon.
Andy Brown’s men, so dominant in many games so far, could not find the spark to defeat a powerful visiting team.
And although they had chances to win, Newbold earned the luck to see them over the line by 18-10 in this Intermediate Cup clash at the Vagrants.
Brown praised strong performances for Crewe & Nantwich by Matt Standley, Aaron Voller at prop, Eli Woodward, Tom Baldwin, and Jamie Little.
Kirk Robinson scored Crewe’s try, smashing through three defenders and carrying a couple over the line to score in the first half to keep Crewe in the game at half time 10-12.
But Newbold took a grip of the game after the break, and became more confident as the game progressed.
“We cannot argue with the result on the day and we wish good luck to Newbold in the competition,” said coach Brown.
“Thanks to Gwyn, Les, Craig, Mark Ryder, Mark Gammage, Potty and Dudders for arriving at 10am to fork the pitch and get the game on and thanks again to all our fantastic supporters.
“I know we will deliver you some great rugby in 2014, that is a promise!”
Despite the cup loss, the 1sts are top of the Midlands 2 West (North) and have a strong chance of promotion going into the second half of the season.
The 2nds are in fourth place in the Raging Bull North West League Cheshire Cakes Division 2 South, and the 3rds are in sixth place in Raging Bull North West Leagues Division 4 South.
