Fire crews from across South Cheshire have been battling a major blaze at a store in Crewe today (Janaury 27).
More than 20 firefighters are on the scene of the blaze at Hutchins horticultural supplies on Herbert Street.
Many residents around the company have been evacuated as plumes of smoke were sent hundreds of feet into the air, seen across Nantwich and surrounding region.
It’s believed the blaze started in three commercial greenhouses at the site in the Sydney area of the town.
Five fire engines at the scene dealing with the incident from Crewe, Sandbach, Middlewich and Holmes Chapel.
People living nearby are advised to keep their windows shut to avoid homes being filled with smoke.
A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said fire crews have set up “water curtains” to protect neighbouring properties, which have been evacuated as a precaution.
The incident does involve a high voltage electricity cable and crews are liaising with Manweb.
A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: “Police have closed Sydney Road at its junction with Lansdowne Road and Wheatley Road while firefighters work to control the blaze.
“A number of houses have been evacuated and the fire is causing large plumes of smoke.
“Anyone who sees the smoke which has spread towards Sandbach should ensure they keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.”
